Surviving in an Economic Depression
Posted by Rita under Life Management

I am extremely concerned about the dire straits of our Country’s economy, and even more so after listening to Suze Orman last night say that what we are experiencing is as becoming as serious as the Great Depression that our grandparents lived through. All signs are pointing that we are heading in that direction with the folding of Merrill Lynch, the collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers, the government bailing out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac earlier in the month, and now the AIG with 85 billion dollars of the tax payers money. This is the second time in a very short span of time that the government has stepped in to prevent AIG’s collapse! If they were to fold the effects would be felt global wide.
In case you are wondering what the difference is between a recession and an economic depression, there’s an old joke that states: “A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose your job.” A more detailed explaination can be found at Wikipedia.
If we ever had blinders on in regard to state of our economy, now is the time to take them off, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst. So, what are some things we can do now in the event that the worst may happen? The articles “How to Survive Total Economic Collapse” and “How to Store Food for Long Term Survival” are well worth reading. I encourage you to do so. The suggestions there are going to be a bit tough to follow, but it’s definetly time to tighten our belts and learn how to live a lot differently, in order to be ready for the tough times ahead. Oh, and one more thing, if you don’t know how to cook from “scratch” now is the time to learn.
I encourage all of you to share any links that you find on surviving in difficult times, and please share your thoughts on this topic in the comment section.

I am 57 yrs old, pretty much lost it all. I am out of work. I have tried to find work in my field as Administrative Assistant, however due to age and the fact that people with more skills than I and younger can just walk right in. I live in GA which has no workers rights protection, and I am going to relocate in hopes of finding work and some kind of job protection. Any suggestions, I am one heartbeat away of being out in the street.

Marie,
I live in North Carolina. I work for an Electric Co-op, and recently they posted a job opening in sales and marketing. I don’t know if you have experience in that. I also know of a house that will be available for rent in January that rents for $250.00 a month thats close by.
I think the problem with women our age is not our age or our skills, but they fact that we have so much experience, and the employers look at what that they will have to pay you more to hire you.
What kind of yearly salary would you have to have?
In the meantime, find work where you can through temp agencies, and keep looking at the employment office to see what’s available.
Wishing you all the best and feel free to respond back. If you want, we can communicate directly through email.
