Obama States: Lipstick On a Pig Is Still a Pig
Posted by Rita under *Rita Talks, Life Management

(I realize from the jump start that this post is going to be controversial. Even so, I am going to exercise my right to freedom of speech, and express my own thoughts. You are also encouraged to express yours in the comment section.)
I don’t think it was surprising that McCain chose a female as his running mate. After all, he was well aware that there was a close race between Obama and Hillary, and McCain was hoping to attract all of those disappointed Democrats who wanted Hillary to join forces with him.
What is shocking is that of all the females he could have chosen as his running mate, he chose Palin. After all his bashing comments about Obama and his “inexperience,” McCain chooses someone who is extremely inexperienced and unknown. The Governor of Alaska. Alaska has a population of about 670,000. And if it were not for the shameless antics of it’s congressional delegation, most of us in the lower 48 states would not think of Alaska more than a couple times a year.
So what else do we know of Palin? Not much! We know the following:
-
She was a hockey mom.
-
She was in the PTA.
-
She attempted to impose her personal literary values on the public library in Wasilla, AK.
-
She did support the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere.”
-
She did have a non-trivial opinion about the war in Iraq.
-
She did seek to dismiss a state employee for improper reasons.
-
She wants to take the polar bear off the endangered species list.
-
She wants to take women’s rights back to the stone ages, so that we have teenagers dying in a back alley somewhere from using coat hangers for self inflicted abortions.
-
She does not believe that humans have done a thing to cause global warming.
-
McCain offered the veep slot after just one substantive meeting with her — a stunning way to make the most important decision of your life, after selecting your spouse! And speaking of marriage, would anyone in their right mind propose on the first date? No! But he offers her this crucial position based on some mild staff vetting and then just one meeting?
-
The conservative Christian right did the same thing as McCain and has fallen head-over-heels in love with her virtually overnight. Why? Because they do not like McCain, are not happy with what the Bush presidency devolved into, and most importantly, they want very much to believe in someone. ANYONE.
In a nutshell, McCain was grasping for straws, and obviously did not give a lot of thought when choosing someone to fill such an important position. I think that alone says a great deal about McCain in and of itself. If McCain were to win this election, and something were to happen to him, would you want Palin as your President? Who in their right mind would vote for this pair?
McCain may have dressed up his campaign by choosing a pretty, fresh, female face as his running mate, but it does nothing to change the fact that he is incapable of turning this country around and making the changes that are necessary to get our country back on her feet, restore her dignity, and re-gain the respect she once knew the world over. McCain has stated himself that he has been President Bush’s “yes man” by backing him in all of his decisions “90 percent of the time.” Do we really need 4 more years of the same old thing? Can we afford it?
Obama was not making a direct insult to the beautiful Palin when he made the statement that putting lipstick on a pig still makes it a pig. He was merely stating that just because you pick a beautiful woman as your running mate does not change what you stand for, or make you the right man for the job. Obama’s other comment in reference to the same thing went unannounced over the media, when he stated:
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

Bravo, Rita! I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the Republicans just want somebody, anybody, they can believe in again. I know a lot of Republicans. They are my friends. They are smart people. But I wonder how in the world are they going to remain true to their party and vote for this not-so-winning ticket. Yet, I see the McCain yard signs all over my neighborhood. The polls, although polls are often manipulated to show what the pollster wants to show and they have often been wrong in making accurate predictions, are showing McCain leading Obama. I can’t believe it! Of course, I couldn’t believe a majority would elect President Bush for a second term, and they did. I just wish people could wake up and see what’s going on instead of believing those hateful commercials that say nothing about what McCain will do for our country, but only try to denigrate Barack Obama. The truth is simple. McCain AND Palin are liars. They claim things about themselves that are lies, and they try to tell the public things that are absolutely not true about Obama. They say he will raise your taxes. That is hogwash! Obama is about raising taxes, but only for those who are very rich and have already received all kinds of benefits and tax cuts that the middle class did not. Obama is NOT going to raise taxes on people like me and you, who are just working hard to pay the bills. We’re the ones he’s looking out for!
I so wish Obama would run ads that show the public what liars McCain and Palin are. I wish he’d call it like he sees it. Well, I guess he does on his campaign stops. I just wish the media would talk about his reasonable message of hope and change for our country as much as they will latch on to a harmless, everyday saying like, “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” Maybe he should have said, “You can’t make a purse out of sow’s ear.” That would be more likely to be aimed at Palin than the lipstick statement. After all, she’s the Queen of Pork Barrel Politics!

this lipstick issue has made me realize that McCain has become quite the politician since he got his party’s nomination… he has proven time and again that his strategy for winning is based on personal attacks and distracting people from the main issues

I agree with Media Kingdom. We want to hear how we’re going to get the economy stimulated with new jobs for people who want to work. We want to hear about some new technology that allows us to drive vehicles that run on smarter energy solutions for a price the average person can afford. We want to hear about a plan to extricate our soldiers from a country that is torn with tribal warring and that clearly doesn’t want us there anymore. We want to hear how our military is being used to crush Osama bin Laden and the Taliban terrorists that continue to plot against us and vow to kill more and more Americans, once and for all, instead of wasting our military power and losing the lives of young men and women in a senseless war in Iraq. We want to know how everyone in this country, not just the rich and powerful, can afford health care when we’re sick and preventive care so we won’t get sick. We want to know how to rescue our public education system instead of rewarding richer, high performance schools with additional funding they don’t even need when the poor, low performance schools have funding cut and are eventually shut down. All the things so many of us used to take for granted are gone now. And with more and more people out of work and losing their homes, something new has to happen. We can’t take four more years of the same stuff that has almost ruined us. Are the religious right so blind that they can’t see that people’s sexual preference or abortion are NOT the most pressing issues in our country? I am reminded of Jesus’ warning not to work so hard trying to remove the splinter from your neighbor’s eye when there is a log in your own eye. I think a lot of people have been blinded by their logs!
September 13th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Oh my you guys are sooo right! Oops I mean, “left”
It just disgusts me to think that they think that Palin could be a V.P.! All she’s ever done is be a mayor, a small business owner, a governor, a wife and a mother! I mean in comparison to Obama’s experience she’s all wet behind the ears! He’s been a community organizer
In Chicago enacting programs like “acorn” and was in the senate for over 144 days he’s way more qualified to be the v.p.
oh yeah, I mean the president. Bush and McCain are so stupid, tax breaks for the wealthiest 1-percent of Americans I can’t believe that all they are paying is 70% of America’s tax burden! Why not 100% so that all of there business will fail and all of those middle class losers who work for them will lose there jobs!! But that’s all right because they won’t have to pay any taxes any way! Even though when huge corporations receive tax increases they don’t even pay them, they just pass it along to the consumer like you and me. So I guess that our taxes will increase we just wont call them taxes! So why don’t we just stick it to big oil!! I mean 8 cents per gallon of gas is their profit! What an outrage! Even though the federal government gets 80 cents per gallon and all they do is sit on there hands and let the oil companies do all of the exploring drilling, extracting, piping, refining, and transporting. Like my mom always said, work smarter not harder. Maybe we ought to impose a windfall profit tax on the feds to huh!! And those polar bears!! Can you believe that in 1970 there were fewer than 3000 of them and since “global warming” they’ve gone to over 27,000 in 2008. (Wait I’m confused, is an endangered species the one that’s growing or the one that’s disappearing? I forget) never the less I’m sure its not the environmentalists way of putting a roadblock in front of drilling in a.n.w.a.r. Just because it could be considered a “natural habitat” for polar bears!! That would be silly. I can’t believe that that idiot Palin would fire a state employee just because he refused to fire a state trooper who threatened to murder Palin’s father as well as tasered his own 15 year old son and was reprimanded for drinking beer in his patrol car in a parking lot while on duty along with numerous other infractions in his on duty driving record. This trooper deserves a medal and a hardy handshake! Palin doesn’t believe in global warming! What a shocker! Those religious fanatics huh? Clinging to God and their guns with antipathy towards those who are different than them. They think that some how God controls everything and created everything. What a joke, can you believe that the earth hasn’t raised a fraction of a degree since 1998 but in fact has gotten slightly cooler and the newest science has shown that increases in carbon content in the atmosphere actually causes a cooling effect and the farmers almanac as well as many reputable weather agencies recently announced that we are heading into a 50 year cooling trend. Get your parkas on!! The ice age is coming!! As if those religious zealots would believe that the earth’s cleansing process runs in a cyclical pattern of between 30 and 50 years, like God knows what he’s doing. I don’t have time to address all of your idiotic uninformed “opinions” there are not enough hours in a day. Try studying simple economics and reading your Bible its amazing how ones opinions change on the sanctity of human life and the social issues when you accept Jesus as your personal Lord and savior.
He said “I am the way, the truth and the life no one cometh unto the Father but by me” (bet that really ticks you off huh?!)The whole one way to heaven thing. Crazy liberals!!
Well I’ve got to go now its time to throw darts at my picture of that holier than though look down your nose at everyone, know it all, Charley Gibbson. I hope he asks the same questions of that socialist Obama that he asked Palin in her interview. Boy would he be exposed for what he is!
September 14th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Thank you for commenting. We were hoping that those who disagreed would also comment.
As for Palin, she refuses to meet the press unless it’s within controlled interviews. She only reads the speeches that are written for her. She is a liar with too much to hide, and continues to lie about things that have been proven lies, and has no remorse about lying. She is a fraud.
McCain is also a liar. He is nothing more than a President Bush dressed in different clothes and wearing a different face. What has the Republican party done for you personally in the past 8 years that you would want more of the same?
As far as “reading your bible”, I am sure I am better versed in it than most. I am a minister’s daughter. It really sickens me when people hide behind Jesus to do all of their dirty work, or somehow twist all he stood for, to try and make whatever they do “right.” But that’s been going on for centuries. It’s no surprise now. Nor is it any surprise that religious fanatics “look down their nose” at anyone who disagrees with them and “judge” that they do not have a personal relationship with God.
Hang around, keep your eyes, ears and mind open, and maybe you will become more “informed.”

Well, I am pleased to see a conversation going on. I wish the candidates could talk about issues we all care about, too. And I think they will. The debates are coming, and I’m looking forward to hearing what they have to say to the American public about the economy, the Iraq war and other issues of national security, the energy crisis, health care, the infrastructure of our country, and many other issues that affect us not just today, but for generations to come. I imagine when the American people hear what the candidates have to say on these and other important issues, they’ll make informed choices when they vote. But, the sad thing is that most Americans won’t watch the debates, and some who do won’t really “hear” what the candidates say. So, most people who vote will vote strictly on the name of the party that they have always voted for, believing the same stereotypical nonsense that they have always believed. I’m just glad that at the present moment, the Republican party is a party that is on the decline, and the Democratic party is a party gaining in strength. It might save us this time around. But I would never want this country to end up without two parties. I treasure the differences and the debate. It’s what our founding fathers encountered when they made choices for our country, and it’s something that we need. I just wish more people could open their minds. A closed mind is a terribly dangerous thing. We have witnessed that in the radical, extremist Islamists, and we witness it every single day in the radical, extremist Christians.
I will cease my comments with the words of that great Republican leader who brought our country through the greatest crisis that we’ve yet encountered, the Civil War:
“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.”
I challenge Americans to watch the debates and do your homework, and may you make a wise decision on November 4.

I forgot to mention that the great Republican I quoted was Abraham Lincoln, but I thought it would be obvious who I was talking about, but then I thought, no, probably not, so I want to make it clear that it was Abraham Lincoln. May he who I am sure is spinning wildly in his grave rest in peace.

Hi Rita: Thanks for all the info. I’m finding the US election quite fascinating this time around - right from the primaries on. I just wrote a short, naturally left-wing blog, about how your federal election is more interesting than ours. I’m going back in & linking to this.
Cheers

Not only am I married to a pastor’s daughter but I’m also a preacher myself. When encountered with any issue of right or wrong my standard is Gods inerrant infallible word of God the Bible.
It says seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. I don’t hide behind it; it shines a bright light on men’s actions to expose them for what they are. Abortion is a sin, I’m not saying that, scripture says that. When I stand before all mighty God on the day of judgement I don’t want to have to explain why I supported it and contributed to the party who never met a baby they didn’t want to kill. I couldn’t ever be a democrat based souly on the moral issues, never mind there really messed up views on our economy and foreign policy and there plan of appeasement. Did you know that Obama cast the deciding vote in the senate concerning infanticide, a bill that even the most liberal senators wouldn’t vote for! He votes more socialists than Bernie Sanders, the only senator who is from the actual socialist party!! What have the republicans done for me in the last eight years? Well every year I get a nice little tax return because of the removal of the marriage penalty tax and other tort reform passed by this admin. And how many times have we been attacked on our own soil by terrorists since 9-11? Like paying $4.50 a gallon for gas? In 1994 Clinton vetoed a bill to begin extracting oil from a.n.w.a.r. That was over 12 years ago. We would be less reliant on foreign oil and paying less at the pump. But we’re not, courtesy of Bill Clinton and the democrats! The only reason we can’t do anything now is because our precious democrat congress (approval rating of 11%) and Nancy Pelosi refuse to lift the legislative ban on drilling. Bush has lifted the executive ban! Republicans hands are tied in doing beneficial things because the “Demos” are the majority. I could go on and on about the good that has come out of this administration. All you have to respond with are accusations of being a “liar” your jabs are vague and completely unbacked by fact. Fortunately some of us in the United States of America pay more attention to fact checking and researching our issues than merely watching the six o’clock news with Katie Courik (fair and balanced, yeah right!) don’t just tell me some ones a liar, or what ever your gripe is, prove it!! with facts (and make sure there right or you wont look to bright). and that “looking down your nose” comment was used to describe Charley Gibson with his glasses pompously perched at the tip of his nose. but I understand you not getting that because you don’t even think that the lipstick comment was directed toward Sarah Palin!! Even though 5 days earlier she made a comment about “lipstick” at the convention. hmmm what are the chances of timing like that? But I’m sure Obama uses lipstick references all the time in his every day life.
September 14th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
just thought I’d mention that i’m not a “Republican” I’m a conservative first and I vote for whom ever I feel has got it right.
September 14th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Jerald, calm down.
First of all, you live in a country that is not a theocracy. Almost all of us subscribe to the basic tenets of Judeo-Christian tradition that start with the Ten Commandments and gets only slightly more specific. The problem comes with trying to govern a nation on purely religious principles. If you take literally Jesus’ commandment that you forgive those who offend you not seven times but seventy-seven (meaning an infinite number), then you don’t go into Afghanistan after Osama bin Laden (maybe Bush is more truly Christian than I gave him credit for), or if you take at face value that in order to follow Jesus you must sell all that you have and feed the poor you must commit as a government to a purely communist state (from each according to his assets to each according to his needs). None of us wants any of that. We also don’t want the Commandment “Thou shalt not kill” turned into a blanket ban on abortion (or the death penalty, perhaps, but I digress)that forces young women to risk their lives getting dangerous illegal abortions, as was too common before Roe v. Wade. Government involves a delicate balance between a leader’s personal religious beliefs and a practical application of the law that benefits the most people. You should, therefore, thank God that the United States Constitution prevents the teaching or singular application of the beliefs of any one religion by the government because the religion in power might not be yours.
Second, your drinking of Conservative Kool-Aid has given you Hard Right Diabetes. Yes, it is a good thing that the top 1% of income earners in the US pay 40% of the taxes. They can afford it, as their average income is over $366,000 and they pay an average of 17% of their income in taxes. If my math is correct, then a person at the bottom of the top 1% still gets to take home over $300,000. This is from Kiplinger’s the personal finance people based on 2007’s returns:
<>
So, if the bottom 50% of wage earners don’t pay diddly in taxes, it’s because they don’t make diddly in wages.
It’s the people like me, and perhaps you, that bear the unfair burden. I work three jobs to make about $40,000 a year. I pay about 30% of that in taxes when you take social security, medicare, etc. into account. When I think that the top 1% is paying only 17% on average, well, my butt just bleeds soda crackers for them.
Now–who calls the shots for the GOP? The people who have the money. They have the money to scare well-meaning people like you into thinking that if you vote for the Dems you will have a gay abortion clinic with terrorists in the basement on every corner. Then they scare you into thinking that you will get fired because Chip McTrustfund won’t be able to buy a new yacht which will decrease demand for jobs at your widget factory. In fact, if Chip wants a boat, he will still have plenty of money to buy a boat. And Chip still needs someone to write his contracts and give him a colonoscopy and cook his books, and those people still need people to prepare their food and teach their kids, and build their houses, so the economy absolutely will not collapse because Chip is making $40,000 less (which allowed me to go out to eat a couple of times a month more or give a little more to my church).
Don’t panic, Jerald. You can still believe as you want to believe if Obama is elected. If that happens and you make less than $100,000 a year, here’s how you will benefit:
–You’ll be able to get medical care that you might not have previously been able to afford.
–You’ll get a few more bucks in your check at the end of the month. (Chip won’t miss it.)
–Maybe the government can rebuild that crumbling bridge in your town instead of paying Halliburton to electrocute our troops in Iraq. (Google that one under “KBR” and “showers”).
–You (or your children) can go to college without having six-digit loans to pay back when you graduate (five digits are easier to pay back).
–If you get to travel abroad, people won’t think you are a war criminal because your country is holding people in prisons all over the world without any due process whatsoever.
It’ll be all right, Jerald.
September 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
My husband turned me on to a really good Internet site: http://www.realclearpolitics.com.
I’ve learned a lot from reading the articles written from the conservatives and the liberals and those like the most of us who are in between somewhere. They also track a lot of polls instead of whatever the 6 o’clock news decides to broadcast (although I still say I don’t put much store in polls). So, if you find US politics fascinating, you might just enjoy that site.
And one last comment to Pastor Jerald: I am a Democrat, and I have never ever in my whole life wanted to kill any baby, much less every baby I see. I think you could at least admit you’re wrong about that.

My stats from Kiplinger’s were eaten by the ether. Here they are:
New statistics from the Internal Revenue Service show that the highest-earning 1% of taxpayers in America make 22.06% of all income reported to the government. That’s almost twice the 12.51% of total income earned collectively by the lowest-earning 50% of workers. Yes, 1.4 million taxpayers claim 22% of income earned while 68 million share just 12.5%.
Oh, Jerald, I did think of one more good thing for you about Obama getting elected: You can protest outside Planned Parenthood (from a reasonable distance) all you want and the FBI and Fatherland–oops–Homeland Security won’t open a file on you.
